Geraniol is a lymphatic terpene alcohol (acyclic monoterpene) present in many essences extracted from plants. It is an oily liquid, colorless, sometimes yellowish, with a pleasant odor. It is easily soluble in ethanol and ether and has various applications. It is extracted from the flowers and leaves of geranium of which it is a principle together with citronellol, linalol, terpinol and methyl-eugenol. Geraniol is also found in nature in verbena, myrtle, lemon balm. At the food level it can be found in oranges, bergamot, nutmeg, carrots and blueberries. The properties of natural terpenes in relation to insects can be more complex than the simple repellent action. Geraniol, for example, has a repellent action towards certain species that can be harmful, while it has a strong attractant action towards pollinating insects.
Neem extract , obtained from the cold-pressed oil of the shelled seeds of Azadirachta indica using supercritical carbon dioxide, is the subject of numerous studies for its effectiveness against over 200 species of insects as well as various mites, nematodes, fungi, and bacteria. It has a very low toxicity to the point that this compound is considered harmless to humans and vertebrates, including fish. The environmental impact is also very low: it has a notable selectivity towards useful insects, including bees, and is permitted in organic farming. In the soil it degrades in a few days.
